One of the largest startup competitions in the US, the MN Cup, announced BKB Floral Foam as the 2022 MN Cup Grand Prize winner. This annual competition is a community-led, public-private partnership that comes together to boost Minnesota’s entrepreneurs.
BKB is working towards a renewable and compostable future for the floral and horticultural industries by making sustainable replacements for current non-degradable foams made from fossil fuels. The winning technology for the 2022 MN Cup competition was BKB’s compostable floral foam brick.
CSP researchers partnered with BKB Floral Foam founders Dundee and Ian Butcher to develop these renewable and biodegradable foams. CSP alum David Goldfeld is the CTO of the venture, supporting the commercialization of the technology that came from CSP research.
BKB expects to have the first floral foam products available for testing in the market in the second half of 2022, with plans to launch full scale production in 2023. The Minnesota-based research and development team has been working towards commercialization of the foam technology, with patents secured by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office earlier this year.
